30TH BIRTHDAY T SHIRT

The Korean group Kiss made this music video for their song (translated in english) "because I'm a girl". I've only heard the korean version so I don't really know what the song is saying, only that the music is pretty and the music video made me cry. This music video is about 8 minutes long and tells an initially romantic story that takes a really unexpected twist. Most America music videos are much short and the twist in the plot--if there even is a plot--is rarely ever as suprising as this twist. I wonder if this is specific to the group Kiss or if often Korean music videos are longer with an intense twisting plot.

This starts off with a girl and guy who happens to be a photographer seeing each other and its sort of love at first sight. They get together and have romantic moments. The guy takes pictures of her and develops them. One day while developing the pictures he gets a call and quickly tosses the developer chemical back on the shelf without its top on. He goes and finds her, and some more romance occurs so you almost forget about the bottle looming ominously on the shelf in his dark room. Then they're seen together in his apartment and she goes into the dark room to get something, reaches up into the shelf and the bottle drops , spilling out into her eyes. She is screaming and taken to the hospital and the guy is a wreck. At first I thought she was scarred from it but then it switches to her and she is perfectly fine but crying cause the guy has left her. At this point I was just confused. Next she sees a picture the guy took of her on the cover of a magazine. Again, this only confused me more. Then she's walking through the parks and sees the guy she loved with a seeing eye dog holding a picture of her, he drops it and it becomes clear he is blind. She gives him back the picture. You now realize, the liquid blinded her but the photographer who loved her gave her his eyes. So now he can't be a photographer anymore. I was confused and by the time I figured it all out, I was crying.

This story is either romantily tragic or tragically insane. Either way, its a really complex story for a music video. At least in the case of this Korean music video, a lot more thought was put into developing the music video than for American videos. We tend to focus on images and this video emphasises a story. Its worth seeing, but if you're like me you'll probably burst into tears.

I'm working on my 2nd music video. It's been a while since I last got involved in the pre-production side of things so i've decided to co-produce, ast direct the piece but most importantly head up the cinematography.
